Compress PDF to 1MB
Need a PDF less than 1 MB for a form, a portal or an email? 1 MB is the gentlest common size limit: most documents fit below it with little or no visible change, because PDFHive tries the lightest settings first and only compresses harder when it has to.
Your files are processed in your browser and never leave your device.
How to use Compress PDF to 1MB
- Pick the PDF you want to shrink. The target is already 1 MB.
- Click "Compress PDF". Light compression is tried first, then stronger settings only if needed.
- Download the PDF once you have checked the new size.
- If the PDF was already under 1 MB, PDFHive says so, and you can upload the original as it is.
How to compress a PDF file to 1 MB without losing quality
Under a 1 MB limit, most PDFs only need light compression: images keep their full size and are just saved more efficiently, so pages look the same as before. Text, fonts and links are never changed.
Long scans are the exception. A scanned page usually takes about 150 to 200 KB at good quality, so more than about five scanned pages may need the Strong setting, which still keeps text clear. Beyond about ten pages, Black and white is the way to fit a text-only scan.
What if your PDF is still over 1 MB?
1 MB is a generous limit, and most documents fit with no visible change. The exceptions are long scans and PDFs full of photos, such as brochures or photo reports.
- Choose Strong: pictures get smaller while text stays sharp enough to read.
- For a long scanned document where colour doesn't matter, choose Black and white.
- Remove pages you don't need with Delete PDF pages, then compress again.
Frequently asked questions
Will I notice a difference in quality?
Usually not. PDFHive starts with the lightest setting and only goes further if the file still doesn't fit. For most documents the difference is hard to see.
Why does it say my PDF is already under 1 MB?
If your file already fits, PDFHive tells you before you start. It then only tidies the file without lowering quality, so there is no reason to compress it harder.
Is 1 MB the same as 1,000 KB?
Websites count a megabyte as either 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes. PDFHive aims for 1,000,000 bytes, so the file fits whichever way it is measured.
How long can my document be?
There is no page limit. Documents made on a computer fit 1 MB at almost any length. Scans of more than about five pages may need the Strong setting, and more than about ten pages Black and white.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome and other modern phone browsers, and large scans just take a little longer.
